Have we built Asian American power?

Have we built Asian American power?

A lunch briefing & discussion

Since the 1970s, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in Illinois have been civically engaged, and running for office with varying levels of success. Now Illinois is about to see its first Asian American elected to the state’s General Assembly, as well as the potential for Asian Americans to win at the federal, state, and county levels all in one year. Why has it taken this long, what has caused this seemingly sudden surge, and what will this mean for the next 30 years?

Join us on August 23rd for a lunchtime discussion to examine the role of race, identity, and public policies like “communities of interest” have on AAPI political empowerment. General Assembly candidates Theresa Mah and Harish Patel and WBEZ reporter Odette Yousef will explore how these factors played out in the recent primary elections, and the challenges and opportunities of engaging AAPI communities in the 2016 general election and beyond.

The event includes a panel of community respondents who will discuss redistricting, automatic voter registration, and mobilization strategies for our communities.
